It often surprises me how many recreational pilots focus on figures rather than the quality (or is it fun?) of a flight. On the whole it seems more characteristic, more impressive to mention high mileage, but not the conditions of the day or the silly risks you have taken to achieve your goal. Risks that could have killed you. If we can somehow change that attitude, we've made significant progress.

What if we changed the scoring system? If somehow we could give points for the beauty, the quality of a flight. To reward sensible piloting, instead of disproportionate risk seeking. Would that help in reducing the risk? What would that do for our sport as a whole? I know beauty and quality are a bit vague (you can't really describe it, but you know it when you see it). But, if we have software that calculates your optimum points from a track log, why not some software that calculates the beauty of flight? Software that reduces your points if you take a disproportionate risk, for example.
